Hurriquake Hits Ojai – 37 Aftershocks Rock the Iconic Small Town

As if preparing the Ojai Valley for a once in a century tropical storm wasn’t enough, add a 5.1 earthquake into the mix to make things a lot more interesting – the staff of Cali Mag was right on the epicenter when it all went down.

Yesterday at approximately 2:40 P.M., a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the area rattling a lot of nerves in the area – not just the ground.

The earth keep skaking, to the tune of approximately 37 aftershocks with not one but two 4.0 magnitude quakes at 2:45 p.m. and 10:29 P.M.

The earthquake was centered two miles out of Ojai and felt as far south as Orange County. Tres Hermanas, a local eatery just two blocks from where the Cali Mag staff was working on our sister publication, Ojai Life and Style, posted this video from their surveillance cameras.

Not long after the quake we heard the county choppers overheard flying low to observe the area for damage.

VC Star reported the following:

  • No reports of injuries or major damage to structures.
  • Four buildings at Thomas Aquinas College near Ojai had minor damage, including cracks in the drywall. Additional damage was found on the bell tower, which will require further inspection by building officials.
  • Initial inspections of Southern California Gas Co. and Southern California Edison electrical equipment showed no issues.
  • The county’s aviation unit had completed an aerial inspection of the city of Ojai, Lake Casitas dam and Matilija dam and also reported no issues.

This is a developing story and we will have more updates as they are available.
